MINNEAPOLIS (AP) What you need to know before the opening of the state’s largest casino, in one city, is what the town of Twin Falls, Minn., already knows: It’s the smallest casino in the country.
The city of Twin Rapids was one of the first to get a slot machine.
And now it’s one of six Twin Falls casinos that have opened across the country, opening this weekend.
A Minnesota Department of Economic Development study says Twin Falls is the smallest slot machine-based casino in North America.
But unlike most, it’s a state-run casino, not a private company.
The state says the state does not require local governments to provide public assistance for slot machines.
The Twin Falls casino has a limited number of slot machines but it’s expected to be more than 10 times the size of the average slot machine in most places.TNT Casino in Bismarck opened in January and has had its first major expansion in months, adding a new bar, restaurants, a hotel, more than 20,000 square feet of casino-style space and a full-service bar and restaurant.
The company said the new slot machines will cost between $50 and $60 a piece.
The Twin Falls city council approved $2.5 million for a new casino to be built next to the existing slot machines at the nearby Town Hall Casino.
The city also approved a hotel at the former Twin Falls Police Station site that will house a high-tech gaming center.
The mayor said the Twin Falls City Council will approve a $3.6 million increase for an arena, with $500,000 from the state, to replace the Town Hall casino.
The new arena will be used for sports and entertainment events.
A $250 million arena in Fargo will be dedicated for entertainment, a Fargo city councilwoman said.
A $1.5 billion stadium in the Twin Cities is scheduled to open later this year and has been earmarked for concerts and other events.
A casino in South Dakota has become the largest in the nation, with a $1 billion expansion expected to create more than 2,200 jobs.
The South Dakota Gaming Commission has approved a $250,000 loan for the project.
